Furniture and accessories should look as though they're adorned with hand-carved accents and gold- or silver-leafing. Soft goods such as upholstery, pillows, and window treatments made of sensible fabrics can be adorned with trims. Tassels accent pillow corners and drapery swags, fringe is often used on the bottoms of upholstered pieces, and many patterned fabrics of different textures and weaves are used together. By simply adding a row of 6" fringe to the bottom of a plain colored sofa, you'll have a more formal look.
Above all, think safety. Though you don't need to do everything before the baby arrives, it's a good idea to have a list of safety issues that need to be addressed when you get your baby gear. Guide to Baby Products, Heather Corley, offers great tips on buying baby cribs, baby strollers, high chairs, and car seats. Whether you buy the most expensive products or borrow from friends, you should not ignore current safety regulations. Older items, borrowed or picked up at garage sales, might not meet current safety standards. They are no bargain. Pass them up and get items that are safe for your little one.
Fabrics on furniture and pillows are usually textured, rather than shiny. Interesting weaves of natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool are typical. New synthetic weaves give a natural look and add durability.
Headboard or Canopy BedYou may not be able to afford a four poster bed (unless you inherit one or visit a really good estate sale), but you can have a strong visual impact by upholstering a large piece of fiberboard and adding buttons for a bit of elegance. There are many ideas for a headboard that can hold it's own in your room. One idea pictured is a wicker basket turned upside down and suspended from the ceiling. Lace or sheer curtains are attached and draped to the side for the look of a coronet. These ideas will give you the look of a bigger bed, at a small price.
