Trims and UpholsteryOne of the best sources for trims and upholstery for a Victorian bedroom is the thrift store. Old damask or velvet drapes can be used to make rich upholstered chairs or pillows. (Even a dress - remember Scarlet O'Hara?) And lace doilies or remnants from projects will trim pillows or lampshades. You can even find hand embroidered pillow cases that will add to the nostalgic feel of your room.
Bedrooms in a casual style home must have a mountain of pillows and a comfortable quilt. Windowcoverings in a casual room usually start with shutters, blinds or shades for privacy and light control. They're enhanced with simple valances of fabrics, often layered over non-traditional drapery hardware. Add a touch of whimsy here using a tree branch or old iron pipe for a curtain rod. Drapery panels often hang at the sides, or use long iron nails or notched tree branches for tie-backs.
Contemporary homes incorporate black and white in wonderful ways. Use dark, charcoal rugs or carpeting. Don't feel obligated to paint all the walls the same. Choose vibrant accent colors for a focal point. Add colorful artwork, shiny or matte finish metal accents, and modern designed fabrics.
Choose a plain white china for greatest versatility. Add table linens and accessory pieces in black or any accent color. Add drama and sophistication to any room in your house. Use black and white alone or with other accent colors to create a style that's classic and simple.
